Bill To Determine Future of Live Music To Appear in Parliament
MPs are searching at a bill to cut red tape about placing on gigs in small venues this afternoon….
MPs are right now going to be presented with The Live Music Bill – which is asking for smaller sized venues to be exempt from having to have an entertainment licence.
The controversial licences mean any venue, no matter how small, has to conform to a series of laws, fill out loads of types and pay out a large fee to put on any type of dwell music.
Because of it, for a lot of smaller sized bars, pubs and clubs the concept of putting on reside music – and giving musicians somewhere to hone their abilities – is currently out of the query.
It really is taken almost three a long time of lobbying for the bill to get this far but in spite of it staying on the agenda in Parliament if significantly less than 100 MPs decide to display up for it it won’t be debated and for that reason it won’t be ready to go any further.

Live Review: Lanterns on the Lake at Cargo, London (1/12)
Cargo’s interior feels like an air-raid shelter or, at least what I envision an air-raid shelter to be like. Set below a disused railway bridge in East London, it is a strange mixture of Dickensian and avant-garde. With a red brick, arched ceiling and cold stone floor, the space doesn’t right away suggest fantastic acoustics. Imposingly wide ventilation tubes hang to either side of the ceiling, and the sound booth is an even greater oddity. This hefty, box-like building appears to be stuck to the back wall by the ceiling, taking up about half the wall width. The remaining space hosts a type of tired art show to add to the Heath Robinson impact. A bar is quickly below the strangely suspended booth, and I’d want danger income to function behind it. At £4.50 a pint ($ seven), the beers are priced accordingly.
On this night, Cargo was busy, so Norwegian post-rockers Maribel opened the show to a realistic dimension crowd. The band offered minimum verbal get in touch with and delivered ponderous, slow-create soundscapes mostly bereft of something by way of a tune. Vocalist Rebekka von Markstein appears to have studied at the school of Portishead. She can certainly sing but tonight strayed off-crucial quite a bit. Perhaps she was just depressed by the subject material. The audience response was polite but muted although an annoying smoke machine also contributed to the gloom.
As the primary event, Lanterns on the Lake by contrast have the tunes, and this simple reality vindicated their greatly melancholic subject material. By the time the Newcastle, UK, outfit took the stage, the area was rammed, hot, and hazy. Lanterns on the Lake ply a compelling amalgam of indie-folk with conventional overtones and post-rock, mingled with a dash of electronica and shoegaze. Band members also switched instruments now and once again, an art in itself with six of them on a cluttered stage.
Opening with “Lungs Quicken”, Lanterns showed a delicate lightness of touch as they layered the song from soft, percussive beginnings via to a Revere-style rinse for a a lot a lot more intense knowledge than on record. Often behind a curtain of extended, blonde hair, singer-guitarist Hazel Wilde’s shimmering, breathy vocals completely complimented the forlorn elegance of the music. Adam Sykes, sporting a fine moustache in the style of a youthful Standard Robert E. Lee, added a lead vocal right here and there and some fragile harmonies, even though drummer Oliver Ketteringham, an uncanny double of 24’s Jack Bauer, also took turns on piano and synth. Brendan Sykes’ bass pulsated and probed, Sarah Kemp’s violin dextrously lit up phrases, and Paul Gregory’s guitar was continuously inventive and now and once more played with a bow.
Lanterns’ 11-song set contained any manner of highlights from the majestic “A Kingdom”, which constructed to an intense Doves-like percussive ending, to the expressive “Keep on Trying” that had an audience member phone out, “What a band. What a fucking band” straight right after. You could practically sense the relief in the brief laughter that followed as an audience fairly mesmerized into quietness by this efficiency collectively breathed out.
