Justin Veron informed SPIN earlier this week, ”Whenever we listen to ["Beth/Rest"], we feel this extra… ‘Yes. We’re going to do this, motherfuckers.’ It’s not irony.” The anthemic closer to final year’s magnificent Bon Iver, Bon Iver may sound like its tuned to the sentiment of early 90′s mainstream cinema (or possibly it is just this video that’s been forever altered how I hear the song), but just take one particular listen to the solo piano version you’ll locate that underneath Hornsby/Winwood schmaltz there’s really a song there.

But on Saturday Night Dwell, Bon Iver played the hell out of the tear-jerker “Beth/Rest”, in addition to our amount a single song of 2011, “Holocene”. Verify out the performances of both beneath (via The Audio Perv). Bonus points to Colin Stetson for sporting a Liturgy t-shirt.

“Holocene”:

“Beth/Rest”:

On a side note: SNL spoofed Lana Del Rey during Weekend Update and it was fairly great/puts almost everything in viewpoint.

Neil Youthful and Insane Horse are going to perform at the MusicCares Person of the Year Gala honoring Paul McCartney on February 10th at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Other acts on the bill of the Grammy weekend charity concert include Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Tony Bennett, the cast of the Beatles Enjoy, and McCartney himself. Eddie Izzard will host.

This will be Neil Youthful and Crazy Horse’s very first public efficiency since the Greendale tour wrapped up in March 2004. The group has reportedly wrapped up function on a new studio album, and just just lately they posted a newly recorded 37-moment jam on Neil Young’s official internet site that wraps up with an epic rendition of “Cortez The Killer.” There’s no word about a tour for the group, but it really is probably a safe and sound bet that they will hit the road at some point this year.

Neil Youthful toured regularly with Insane Horse often in between their formation in 1969 and the Greendale tour of 2003/04, but over the past eight many years Youthful has turned his attention in the direction of other tasks. Numerous followers worried that the group would by no means tour once more, but Insane Horse drummer Ralph Molina just lately wrote on his Facebook wall that he had no such fears. “We were just grazing,” he wrote. “But never ever gone!”

Ringo Starr held court Monday at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, and even if it was an invitation-only affair for the taping of one particular of Sirius XM satellite radio’s Town Hall sessions, it supplied a unusual possibility to witness a Beatle in a club setting.

Starr bantered with a pair of co-hosts, initial with comedian and fellow Brit Russell Brand, then with producer Don Was. Both assisted area questions for the 71-12 months-outdated musician from members of the invitation-only audience, some of whom flew in from as far away as New Jersey.

Some came searching for words of wisdom, as in the situation of a dad who asked Starr what assistance he’d give the man’s youthful son. “What I’ve always attempted to do,” Starr mentioned, “is not inform other folks what to do. I just do what I do.”

Other individuals answered the riddle of how interview questions are like males: excellent ones are tough to uncover. A number of came up with lengthy and convoluted windups that sounded as if they’d been researched deep in the bowels of UCLA’s ethnomusicology department — or maybe the philosophy division. At occasions, it took on the flavor of a Starr Trek convention.

One of the much more interesting queries came from a drummer who asked how Starr came to use the “matched hand” method, in which the two drumsticks are wrapped tight in the fists, rather than the typical drum kit type with the correct hand stick held a lot more like a dinner fork and the left in the fist.

“I didn’t know any far better,” Starr replied unapologetically — then explained that the traditional grip was produced by military and marching band drummers who had to perform an instrument that was suspended at their waistline.

Yet another fan asked no matter whether he regretted that the impromptu “Let It Be” concert on the rooftop of the Abbey Road studio in London, which had taken spot precisely 43 many years earlier, turned out to be the Fab Four’s final public overall performance, instead than a meticulously planned farewell blowout that a popular band may engineer nowadays for its swan song.

“I have no regrets,” he said. He confessed that at the time, the Beatles had toyed with the thought of an exotic performance area, such as an Egyptian pyramid or some other far-flung location, for the concert portion of the “Let It Be” documentary. “But then we just determined, ‘Oh let’s just go up to the roof and have completed with it.’

“That’s the way we worked a lot of the time: There would be all these grand plans, but in the finish it came down to, ‘Let’s just get the job done.’ ”

He said that he’s resisted numerous gives to publish a book and will continue to do so, but that he has tried to share his daily life story via songs he calls “audio-biographies” on his 3 most recent albums.

Right after about an hour’s really worth of concerns and answers, Starr was joined by members of his band for a short set such as a couple of Beatles tunes (“I Wanna Be Your Guy,” “With A Tiny Aid From My Friends”), vintage solo Ringo (“It Do not Come Easy”) and, not coincidentally, “Wings” from his brand-new “Ringo 2012” album, which was released today.

He was joined onstage by guest guitarist Joe Walsh, who became Starr’s brother-in-law in 2008 upon marrying Marjorie Bach, the sister of Starr’s wife, actress Barbara Bach. Each girls cheered their husbands on from their seats in the Troubadour’s balcony.

He noted during the Q&ampA that he plans to place together another edition of the Ringo Starr All-Starr Band to tour this summer season, but mentioned he would not speak about the personnel lineup however.

The session aired live Monday, but will is being repeated today at 3 p.m. Pacific time, Wednesday at 9 a.m., Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Spectrum, Sirius XM Channel 28.

He’s also generating album release-week appearances tonight on CBS-TV’s “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” and Wednesday night on NBC-TV’s “Late Evening With Conan O’Brien.” Then on Feb. 12, he’ll be a presenter at the Grammy Awards ceremony.

The Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj, or Skrillex will soon join a prestigious list of musical acts that includes The Beatles, Carly Simon, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and — skyrockets in flight! — the Starlight Vocal Band. What list is that? Why, the Grammy Awards’ Best New Artist winners.

The history of the Best New Artist is a complicated one. For every no-brainer (Mariah Carey, Amy Winehouse, Adele, pictured), there are some equally contestable choices (Paula Cole over Fiona Apple, A Taste Of Honey over Elton John) and plenty of controversy to spare. (Rule changes still didn’t help artists like Lady Gaga in time; the great Milli Vanilli debacle; Esperanza who?)

So has it proven to be beneficial for a musician or band to walk away with the Best New Artist Grammy, or is the award the kiss of death for a career, as has been rumored in years past? We’ll run down the Best New Artist winners from the past 25 years to see which recipients lived up to their title and what they’ve been up to since their win. The 54th Annual Grammy Awards, which determine the fate of The Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj, and Skrillex, airs live at 8 p.m. EST on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Artist: Bruce Hornsby And The Range
Year Won: 1987
First Hit:“The Way It Is”
Who They Beat: Glass Tiger, Nu Shooz, Simply Red, Timbuk3
Where They Are Now: While Hornsby never had a hit quite as big as “The Way It Is” (the song that propelled him to his Best New Artist Grammy win, which was later sampled in Tupac’s “Changes” and is still heard in dentist offices the world over), the accomplished artist has still been a prevalent name in music. Hornsby, who spent the ’90s touring as the keyboardist for The Grateful Dead and penned hits for artists like Huey Lewis and Don Henley, has released over a dozen albums since his 1987 Grammy win, both as a solo act and with collaborators. The 57-year-old, who also can credit being a three-time Grammy winner, composer, and noted jazz and bluegrass musician over the past 25 years, continues to tour today. That’s just the way it is.

Artist: Jody Watley
Year Won: 1988
First Hit: “Looking For a New Love”
Who They Beat: Breakfast Club, Cutting Crew, Terrence Trent D’Arby, Swing Out Sister
Where They Are Now: You may not actually hear Watley much these days (unless your DJ is feeling especially nostalgic for “Don’t You Want Me”), but her influence is still very much heard. Her 1989 track “Friends”, which featured Eric. B & Rakim, set the standard for hip-hop and pop collaborations, paving the way for hit releases today like Katy Perry and Kanye West’s “E.T.” Since her Grammy win, Watley released eight more albums, appeared on Broadway, and, according to her website, is working on her most recent album and is writing her first novel.

Artist: Tracy Chapman
Year Won: 1989
First Hit: “Fast Car”
Who They Beat: Rick Astley, Toni Childs, Take 6, Vanessa Williams
Where They Are Now: The folk singer/ activist wouldn’t be a one-time Grammy darling. (Nor would she be a victim of Rickrolling.) Nearly 10 years after her Best New Artist win for Gen X’s poverty anthem “Fast Car,” Chapman earned another Grammy (she has four in total) for Best Rock Song for her bluesy 1996 “Give Me One Reason.” While Chapman has been better-known for her social activism over the past two decades, she has released a total of eight studio albums including 2008′s Our Bright Future, a Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Artist: Milli Vanilli
Year Won: 1990
First Hit: “Girl, You Know It’s True”
Who They Beat: Neneh Cherry, Indigo Girls, Soul II Soul, Tone Loc
Where They Are Now: Pop duo Milli Vanilli became music legends after their Best New Artist win, but for all the wrong reasons. After it was discovered that the voices on their debut album All Or Nothing did not feature their voices, rather those of unseen, anonymous vocalists, Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus became the only artists in Grammy history to be stripped of their honor. (The notorious lip-syncing stars were also dropped from their label and All Or Nothing was taken out of print.) While Pilatus (who once boldly compared himself to the likes of Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney) and Morvan attempted to revive their careers under the revamped Real Milli Vanilli and Try ‘N’ B, they never recovered from the Grammy controversy and remained a punchline. Tragically, Pilatus died at the age of 32. He was found dead in a Frankfurt hotel room after consuming a lethal amount of drugs and alcohol.

Artist: Mariah Carey
Year Won: 1991
First Hit: “Vision of Love”
Who They Beat: The Black Crowes, The Kentucky Headhunters, Wilson Phillips, Lisa Stansfield
Where They Are Now: Mariah Carey hasn’t left the spotlight once since her Best New Artist win. The big-voiced pop diva has remained equal parts record-breaking music industry powerhouse (she’s one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, with an estimated over 200 million records sold worldwide and 17 no. 1 hits on Billboard) and tabloid fodder (her infamous TRL meltdown, her marriages, her twins, Glitter) who earned four more Grammys (along with a bevy of other awards) over the past two decades.

Artist: Marc Cohn
Year Won: 1992
First Hit: “Walking in Memphis”
Who They Beat: Boyz II Men, C + C Music Factory, Color Me Badd, Seal
Where They Are Now: Since his surprising Grammy win (Boyz II Men were unarguably one of the biggest acts of the ’90s), the singer-songwriter has released four other studio and independent albums, including 2010′s Listening Booth: 1970, which featured appearances from the likes of Aimee Mann and India.Aire. Still, aside from his breakthrough, the oft-covered “Walking in Memphis,” perhaps the most notable thing about Cohn is that he survived being shot in the head after an attempted carjacking.

NEXT: The rest of the ’90s…

The duo will perform their initial official single, “Crash Your Celebration,” which is at present climbing the pop charts, but what about that second song?

Will Amy and Nick just pull out a Chris Brown cover and call it a day?

Not so rapidly. Epic has just released the audio of Karmin’s 2nd official single, the sunny pop track “Broken Hearted,” which features yet another dose of Amy’s trademark rapping above a Dr. Luke-esque beat.

Nick’s voice, nonetheless, is nowhere to be heard on the song, in which a lover begs her guy not to “leave [her] broken hearted tonight.” Give it a listen below:

What do you assume of the tune? Do you feel it could be successful on radio? How about on the SNL stage? And, far more generally, how are you feeling about Karmin these days? Are you possessing trouble taking Amy seriously as a large-idea, swag-touting raptress contemplating you met her as a wholesome-seeking Berklee grad producing video clips in her apartment? Or are you absolutely onboard with the accents and goofy phrases like “Cheerio?”

All I know for positive is that the last time a relatively unknown artist performed on SNL before releasing an album, critics went to town. In a way, the Lana Del Rey debacle raised the stakes for Karmin even more, so here’s to hoping that they show doubters incorrect — or at least get men and women talking.

We knew the band had been playing the two Coachella dates in April but now two much more American and a Spanish date have been slotted into their schedule.

Pulp have so far been ambigious about the lengthy term long term of their reunion – the fact that it was continuing into 2012 was only confirmed at the start off of the year by a tweet saying “you believe this is over?”

So now we have five confirmed live dates for the band:

11 April 2012 Radio City Music Hall New York, NY, USA
13 April 2012 Coachella Indio, CA, USA
17 April 2012 Warfield San Francisco, CA, USA
20 April 2012 Coachella Indio, CA, USA
4 Might 2012 SOS Festival Murcia, Spain

It is a scene equivalent to The Cure who have been teasing followers by revealing a series of festival appearances for the summer time, but no UK dates so far.

2 Dwell Crew, the rap group popular for lewd get together hits this sort of as “Me So Horny,” has reunited and will be touring this summer time.

Rapper and producer Luther Campbell announced the news on Saturday at the Sundance Film Festival, exactly where he is marketing a quick film referred to as The Existence and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke.

two Live Crew’s 1989 album As Nasty as They Wanna Be gained notoriety as the target of a nationwide anti-obscenity campaign, which culminated in the arrest of three of the group’s members in 1990. They have been quickly acquitted of the obscenity charges, partly on the power of professional testimony from Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

The controversial album ended up promoting much more than two million copies, but the group’s acceptance faded with subsequent albums, and members gradually went their separate techniques.

“I just cannot wait to just commence practicing. That is going to be a blast,” Campbell, the 51-year old MC and modern Miami-Dade Mayoral candidate, told the Linked Press.

“We’re going to execute the songs and everybody’s going to be excited. Some of the older men and women of our generation will be in a position to tell their kids, ‘You’re staying residence tonight, we’re going to see 2 Reside Crew and shake our booty!’”

MPs are searching at a bill to cut red tape about placing on gigs in small venues this afternoon….&#13

MPs are right now going to be presented with The Live Music Bill – which is asking for smaller sized venues to be exempt from having to have an entertainment licence.

The controversial licences mean any venue, no matter how small, has to conform to a series of laws, fill out loads of types and pay out a large fee to put on any type of dwell music.

Because of it, for a lot of smaller sized bars, pubs and clubs the concept of putting on reside music – and giving musicians somewhere to hone their abilities – is currently out of the query.

It really is taken almost three a long time of lobbying for the bill to get this far but in spite of it staying on the agenda in Parliament if significantly less than 100 MPs decide to display up for it it won’t be debated and for that reason it won’t be ready to go any further.

You can locate out far more on the UK Music internet site.
