The Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj, or Skrillex will soon join a prestigious list of musical acts that includes The Beatles, Carly Simon, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and — skyrockets in flight! — the Starlight Vocal Band. What list is that? Why, the Grammy Awards’ Best New Artist winners.

The history of the Best New Artist is a complicated one. For every no-brainer (Mariah Carey, Amy Winehouse, Adele, pictured), there are some equally contestable choices (Paula Cole over Fiona Apple, A Taste Of Honey over Elton John) and plenty of controversy to spare. (Rule changes still didn’t help artists like Lady Gaga in time; the great Milli Vanilli debacle; Esperanza who?)

So has it proven to be beneficial for a musician or band to walk away with the Best New Artist Grammy, or is the award the kiss of death for a career, as has been rumored in years past? We’ll run down the Best New Artist winners from the past 25 years to see which recipients lived up to their title and what they’ve been up to since their win. The 54th Annual Grammy Awards, which determine the fate of The Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj, and Skrillex, airs live at 8 p.m. EST on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Where They Are Now: While Hornsby never had a hit quite as big as “The Way It Is” (the song that propelled him to his Best New Artist Grammy win, which was later sampled in Tupac’s “Changes” and is still heard in dentist offices the world over), the accomplished artist has still been a prevalent name in music. Hornsby, who spent the ’90s touring as the keyboardist for The Grateful Dead and penned hits for artists like Huey Lewis and Don Henley, has released over a dozen albums since his 1987 Grammy win, both as a solo act and with collaborators. The 57-year-old, who also can credit being a three-time Grammy winner, composer, and noted jazz and bluegrass musician over the past 25 years, continues to tour today. That’s just the way it is.

Her 1989 track “Friends”, which featured Eric. B & Rakim, set the standard for hip-hop and pop collaborations, paving the way for hit releases today like Katy Perry and Kanye West’s “E.T.” Since her Grammy win, Watley released eight more albums, appeared on Broadway, and, according to her website, is working on her most recent album and is writing her first novel.

Lady Gaga news: Born This Way singer called up Two Door Cinema Club and told them to write a song

The band were stunned when Gaga phoned to ask if they could come up with a track for her album – quick.

Lead singer Alex Trimble explained: “She stated we only had a week. That is not a lot of time, especially as we were on tour, but I couldn’t turn down this kind of an unbelievable chance. So we worked every single single day and evening and threw it collectively. I am truly proud of it.”

The end result was a remix of Electrical Chapel from GaGa’s Born This Way. It is good.

Bummer, little monsters! In spite of reports of ‘Heavy Metal Lover’ as Lady Gaga’s up coming single, an exec from her label, Interscope Records, nixed the rumors and then some.

In the ‘Ask Billboard‘ characteristic, a Gaga fan wrote in suggesting that her track ‘Scheiße’ must be released as a single. Nonetheless, not only will ‘Scheiße’ not be released as a single, but neither will any of the other remaining tracks. The label executive informed Billboard that he is “not conscious of any latest plans for another single from the album.” Taking into consideration that these kinds of decisions are generally created way in advance, it doesn’t bode effectively for followers of that song nor of ‘Heavy Metal Lover.’

The news follows sluggish sales of her most current single, ‘Marry the Night.’ Although her earlier ‘Born This Way’ tracks have loved top rated 10 good results (the title track hit No. one, ‘Judas’ No. 10, ‘Edge of Glory’ No. 3 and ‘You and I’ No. 6), ‘Marry’ peaked at No. 29 on the Hot 100. Final week, it was stuck at No. 53, whilst this week is slid even further down to No. 65. It is the initial Gaga single (out of a whopping 11!) not to break the top 10 — even after she slashed get rates on the song.

A French music website at first reported that ‘Heavy Metal Lover’ would be released as Gaga’s sixth single, but it seems these rumors were false — however it is possible that ‘Lover’ will be released as a single abroad. Perhaps time will inform!

But do not be concerned, minor monsters. Your mother promised a new album in 2012, so it will not be extended till she graces our airwaves again. Paws up!
