Video: Lou Reed and Metallica – “The View” (directed by Darren Aronofsky)

lou reed video Video: Lou Reed and Metallica – “The View” (directed by Darren Aronofsky)

Well, it’s here. Below, you can watch the Darren Aronofsky-directed music video for “The View”, from Lou Reed and Metallica‘s joint LP Lulu (via IFC). It is, according to Reed, “possibly the best video ever made.”

The video was originally supposed to be for “Iced Honey”, a track considered by our Jeremy Larson as one of the lone highlights on Lulu. However, according to a press release, “it became obvious” ‘The View’ was the way to go” when Reed, Metallica, and Aronofsky met up in San Francisco last month.

Said Aronofsky: “The first time I heard ‘The View’ I was stunned. I had never heard anything like it. Half was all Lou. The other half all Metallica. It was a marriage that on the surface made no sense, but the fusion changed the way I thought about both artists and morphed into something completely fresh and new. I couldn’t stop listening to it. Lou’s crushing lyrics, and the band’s incredible licks. It’s so original and that’s why I wanted to work on it.”

Added Lou: ”I am very excited about working with Darren Aronofsky on our powerful video ‘The View’. I feel Darren understood the power and range of the emotions fueled by the fire of Metallica. His strength and spirit are on display in every frame and I think he has caught the anger, rage and anguish at the bottom of the soul of real rock. A literate man for a literate song. As exciting as the music and that’s a big compliment. Possibly the best video ever made. Black and white filmic noir”.

Metallica’s Lars Ulrich also chimed in: “To have a song like ‘The View’ visualized through the eyes and magic touch of Darren Aronofsky is beyond my wildest dream. The marriage between images, music, and words in this video is indescribably thrilling and I am so next level psyched to be involved in a project that brings together the creative minds of Darren Aronofsky, Lou Reed . . . and The ‘Tallica.”

Lady Gaga Reveals She Directed ‘Marry the Night’ Video

Gaga NDTV Lady Gaga Reveals She Directed Marry the Night Video

YouTube

Lady Gaga made the rounds in India over the weekend; while dishing about a variety of topics, such as Hindi words, the concept of being reborn (this way) and what she plans to do while in India, she revealed that she directed the forthcoming video for ‘Marry the Night.‘

While Gaga shared the directorial credit for ‘Judas‘ with her creative guru Laurieann Gibson, this is the first time she’s lensed a video all by her motherly and monsterly self. If that doesn’t ramp up more excitement for the clip, nothing will.

“I can share exclusively with you that I directed this video myself and it’s my first directorial debut,” Gaga told NDTV, while wearing an all-black ensemble accessorized with sunglasses and a massive, bow-shaped topper. “I also have a special that’s coming out in America around Thanksgiving which I am excited for you all to see … I look forward to sharing my autobiographical video with the world. It’s my favorite song on the record.”

‘Marry the Night’ is essentially Gaga’s love letter to her native New York City and she shot the clip in and around her hometown and its surrounding boros. The premiere date has yet to be determined.

Other interesting points of her conversation with NDTV included her idea that you can be reborn in this lifetime and as many times as you like. Gaga also said she has no plans to make a Bollywood film, but she loves the culture. While in India, she has more interest in meeting fans (and hugging them) in the local areas, as opposed to being a tourist. And she has plans to be philanthropic, too! “I am going to go to any normal places where people go to eat and hang out, and I will go to a few orphanages while I am here. I want to meet people, but not necessarily go sight seeing. That would take quite a bit of time,” Gaga said.

As noted yesterday, Nicki Minaj walks away with Kanye West’s just-released “Monster” video just like she does the song; in playing two different versions of herself, she manages to hit on a dozen or so different aspects of her personality.

If you ask Minaj herself, nobody should be surprised that her acting chops are top-notch: “I went to school to be an actress. I never expected to be a rapper. It just fell in my lap,” she told Entertainment Weekly at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. “So I would like to get an acting gig. I hope that when I am done with the tour I can go back and do some acting. That is my long-term goal.”

The tour in question is her upcoming trek with Britney Spears:”I want to go all out and make it over the top and theatrical. There will be costume changes and hair changes. Lots of sexy outfits and dancing,” she explained. “I don’t know how to do things normal and boring. Why? People pay good money for concert tickets these days.”

As far as her acting aspirations go, she’s looking for a bit more than the usual rapper-to-actor transitions (meaning we won’t be seeing Nicki’s version of Killa Season). “I want to work with Will Smith, because he’s a very successful rapper turned actor and therefore a role model,” Minaj said. “And Tim Burton because I love his crazy imagination. He comes up with these characters that are just so fascinating and the costumes and just creates these whole worlds.”

Nicki could certainly fit right in to Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Maybe there’s room for her in one of his upcoming projects, like as a bootylicious vampire in Dark Shadows? Or perhaps Burton should now build something around Smith and Minaj, like a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sequel with Smith as Wonka and Minaj as Veruca Salt? (She can even do her terrible British accent!) Make it happen, Hollywood!
