Valdur – “Berserrker” (Stereogum Premiere)

The ballsy Mammoth, Lakes California trio Valdur play blistering blackened punk/war metal (featuring a Norwegian-born vocalist named Thor). They aren’t crusty like Bone Awl. It’s a close-cropped brutal death-inflected BM sound: Think of the recent recordings of Philadelphia’s (great black hope) woe captured during a Western blizzard and with a more straightforward/traditional, less twisting/mathy/post-black forward push. Which isn’t to say this music isn’t complex: Valdur create an epic, dense atmosphere and display a surprisingly graceful ear for melody and a strong dynamic pull within all that buzzing. They also bring along an uncompromising DIY spirit to the table: As with their 2007 self-titled debut and 2008 split with Lightning Swords of Death, the band released this new “self-funded” full-length, Raven God Amongst Us, on drummer Sxuperion’s Bloody Mountain imprint. (You may recognize the album title from the name of a track on that Lightning split.) Its most immediate track is the single “Berserrker,” a kind of fight song for the band, and maybe USBM in general.

The Raveonettes Cover The Stone Roses

The Cass Bird & Molly Schiot-directed video for the Raveonettes’ cover of the Stone Roses’ 1989 debut opener “I Wanna Be Adored” starts with and returns to a pair of clunky green Doc Marten boots — a personal detail of the younger half of the clip’s odd couple, true, and this whole thing was put together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the punk-beloved shoe company, Dr. Martens. On the Raveonettes last album In And Out Of Control, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo reminded me of Jesus & Mary Chain/Phil Spector/Magnetic Fields’ Distortion. Here, they go in a different, airier direction.

The Chemical Brothers, Chromeo, YACHT @ Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood 8/29/10

Playing only a handful of shows in the States in support of their latest album Further, the Chemical Brothers went big for an electrifying debut at the Hollywood Bowl. As part of the KCRW World Festival, Chromeo was more than business causal with a hip shaking set while YACHT incorporated a slew of drummers and dancers while dressing up for the special occasion.

MR. INTL – “And I’m (So In Love With You)”

Still waiting for Andy Butler to wrap up and ship out the next Hercules & Love Affair record — which would follow an eponymous masterstroke of a debut and feature a mostly new cast of characters, since some of the old crew’s on to the next one. In the meantime Butler’s created MR. INTL, a label about which he has clearly defined parameters: “I don’t want anything that sounds pre ‘85 or post ‘94 … I want to evoke strictly that sound on this label, so I’ve been pretty hard ass with people in terms of what the output is.” To that end comes the track “And I’m (So In Love With You),” which furthers that state intent by using exclusively the sort of house-meets-techno analog technology of 1992. It’s a good H&LA installment stopgap:

Gold Panda – “Snow & Taxis”

Here it is, the case made in just under five minutes for why you should be anticipating Gold Panda’s debut full-length Lucky Shiner, due 10/12 via Ghostly. “Snow & Taxis” is the first listen, the album website is here. Herein Gold Panda’s playing with small-scale samples in a way Axel Wilner stitches and bucks up his microcuts, and unlike the Gold Panda breakout “Quitters Raga,” this is delivered without vocals, or if what we’re hearing at three minutes is a human voice, then without words. It’s ringing bells, loops sliced so thin they practically trance, and clubfloor beats in a Four Tet in The Field combination. Good track, hear/grab it:
