Critic’s Notebook: At Coachella, a rebellious spirit
The booking of Pulp, with its ‘Common People’ anti-1% screed, typifies Coachella ’12.
One of the great, universal rock anthems of the last two decades — Pulp’s “Common People” — bypassed the U.S. when it exploded out of England in 1995. But if and when a reunited Pulp plays the song at this year’s Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., its artful and catchy screed against the 1% couldn’t be more timely.
At a moment when jobless kids are cracking open piggy banks and digging deep for a Coachella ticket to see 120-odd bands over one weekend at the Indio festival, Pulp seems the most relevant among veteran acts that also include Refused, Mazzy Star, At the Drive-In, Company Flow, Madness and Squeeze. But Pulp’s arrival isn’t the biggest name coming out of the desert’s festival, which runs two consecutive weekends. This year’s roster, which was announced Monday afternoon by promoter Goldenvoice, will feature Dr. Dre and Snoop, Radiohead and the Black Keys as headliners, while dozens of other acts will occupy the festival’s five stages, including Grammy-nominated names such as Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine and David Guetta. An undercard includes dance, hip-hop and rock upstarts SBTRKT, M83, Azealia Banks and Feist.
Pulp’s arrival at Coachella this year, however, typifies the festival, its ever-evolving and maturing aesthetic, and its place in the culture right now.
“Common People” is a lyrical conversation with a rich girl longing to slum it with the commoners. With bitterness in his voice, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker tells of her desire to “sing along with the common people,” then replies that she could never truly do that because inherited wealth blinds her to the realities of the paycheck-to-paycheck life. “You’ll never get it right,” he sings, conjuring the spirit of both Ray Davies and Bob Dylan, “’cos when you’re laid in bed at night/watching roaches climb the wall/if you call your dad, he could stop it all.”
The Best Albums of 2011
Was it The Year of The Diva? Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Florence Welsh, Adele, Nicki Minaj certainly all sold a big chunk of records, and are all contributing to the maintenance of the record-label format. On the other hand, was it The Year of the Underdog? In 2011, we also witnessed do-it-yourself veterans like Bon Iver and M83 emerge as equally compelling artists as any label exec could ever muster up.
Our list ranges from the epitome of record label wealth (“Watch the Throne”) to the mind-boggling potential of self-reliant distribution (“The King of Limbs”). Below are 20 favorites from the past 12 months.
20. Radiohead – The King of Limbs
Initially, The King of Limbs was not well received, yet it has made an astounding appearance on most end-of-year album lists all over the music world. From the first few notes of Radiohead’s The King of Limbs, it is obvious that Radiohead’s eighth record falls somewhere outside of the musical spectrum that fans have become familiar with. This may have added to the questionable reaction, but perhaps it took a little time for the album to settle in.
The King of Limbs begins with Radiohead’s usual electronic percussion; however, uneven time signatures help add a hint of intrigue to the otherwise meticulously precise musicality of the album. Despite the album’s unusually short length, the listener is treated to swelling horns, creative guitar work, and the ever-present Thom Yorke passion. The King of Limbs plays for less than 40 minutes, but each song seems to flow into the next without a discordant note.

Searching back at the best music videos of 2011, a single factor leapt out: All of the best clips have been made by the exact same six or seven folks.
So rather than phone out individual entries for their greatness, we’re going to reward the directors who place with each other the best portfolios this year. Anyone can make 1 superb video, but it takes significant jiu-jitsu to knock out three excellent ones. That left a lot of wonderful movies on the table (all apologies to outstanding entries like Foo Fighters’ “Walk,” Beyoncé’s “Countdown,” and Ke$ ha’s “Blow”), but this is a rather great sum-up of the year in music movies.

Jonze only stood behind the camera for two videos this year, but they had been each game-changers. Beastie Boys’ “Don’t Play No Game That I Cannot Win” was a sandbox revelation that was way much better than the actual characteristic film primarily based on GI Joe, whilst Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Otis” turned that pair’s obsession with commercialism into a bombastic brand of Americana. Pour a single out for the fallen Maybach, and raise your glass to Jonze, who proved that no quantity of directing polarizing adaptations of beloved books for youngsters can take away his 4-minute spark.
2) Canada

I promised the staff I would not go all Masterpiece Theater with this intro, so I’ll be brief. Our Annual Report has reached its halfway point with our Top 50 Songs of the Year. The many flags of our staff are hoisted high — and we couldn’t be happier with what we’re saluting. From Cults’ very first song to Tom Waits’ thousandth song, we put up the tracks that left us with more thoughts, feelings, and impressions than any other. We think we done good.
