If there’s 1 issue that can be said about the Maybach Music Group, each member is solidly self-assured, such as their in-house DJ Scream, and with good cause. The native of Decatur, Ga., has been rocking turntables because his youth. In three months, he discovered how to spin using three records from Nas, Outkast and Wu-Tang Clan.

“I just had an infatuation with generating men and women move and dance and actually react to what I was performing,” he tells The BoomBox. “It was not in my character to be a rapper. I did not actually have an interest in getting a rapper, so I just kinda gravitated in the direction of becoming a DJ.”

He began functioning proper away, spinning at home parties and making mixtapes before he was even outdated enough to drive.

By the time Scream got to Tuskegee University, he was currently prepped in how to further his profession. He was producing income from his mixtapes and house parties whilst there, but the objective was never ever exclusively about acquiring money. Scream was interested in the various avenues he could take while doing what he loved, so he moved into college radio. His profession has been anchored by three aspects: mixtapes, parties and radio. He’d mastered every prior to even garnering national consideration.

Live review: Best Coast at the Wiltern

Live review: Best Coast at the Wiltern
Bethany Cosentino is probably the most on-message songwriter in rock music proper now. Above her two albums as Greatest Coast, like this year’s “The Only Place,” the L.A.-based mostly singer returns to her beloved themes — the pleasures of California, the pangs of coupledom — with the exact same dedication that Rick Ross applys to describing his car fleet.

But 1 song that she played at her massive homecoming present at the Wiltern on Friday showed she might be expanding uncomfortable in that niche. “How They Want Me to Be” is a tender bit of pre-Beatles pop with a light country haze. On Friday, Cosentino played it as a rebuttal to her stereotype as a stoner cat lady-turned-overnight superstar. “All of my close friends stick up their noses, inquire me the place my cash is,” she sang. “I don’t want to be how they want me to be.”

Cosentino is a scrappy, relatable songwriter expanding into an actual pop star, a single with an acumen for self-branding. On Friday, just when all the cats and weed and Californiana edged up to cliché, she’d subvert it with a newfound self-awareness. Very best Coast’s show codified 1 of L.A.’s newest rock stars, but it also showed how “being yourself” is a efficiency for Cosentino as effectively.
