Album review: On ‘MDNA,’ Madonna is no longer pushing pop forward

Album review: On MDNA, Madonna is no longer pushing pop forward
Twenty years ago, when Madonna was at the best of her game, she published her provocative art book “Sex.” In it, she integrated photos of herself in numerous states of undress and wrote about the art of seduction. Her tips incorporated sporting great perfume, garter belts but no underpants and that “on each and every date you have to say 1 truly disarming factor.”

Decades later on, the now-53-year-old confirms, for greater or for worse — Okay, worse — that Madge of the Dance Floor is practically nothing if not steady. On her 12th studio album, “MDNA,” she follows the assistance she laid out at her peak. Madonna is garter-belt sexy for “Girl Gone Wild,” metaphorically takes off her undies on “I’m Addicted” and tosses off half a dozen generally “disarming things” about her private lifestyle (therefore the reason that this has been dubbed her “divorce album”).

But the Madonna of nowadays has lost the art of surprise, and the shock and awe she employed to inspire with every new move have gone the way of her bullet bra and taffeta skirts. Much more essential, Madge appears to have lost her capability to create in that magical space that pushes pop forward although remaining entirely of the second.

Madonna, daughter Lourdes share the mic on new track ‘Superstar’ — listen here

Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon, 15, has been gradually edging her way into the spotlight by attending New York’s Famed LaGuardia Substantial College, co-designing the Materials Woman line with her famous mom, and acting in an on-line sweepstakes viral video for the brand.

Right now marks yet another move forward — “Lola” sings back-up on “Superstar,” the latest track to leak from MDNA (out March 26). Hear a snippet of the song beneath.

Generally Madge-ian lyrical complexity aside (“you can have the password to my phone”?), “Superstar” is a beautiful homage to li’l Lo that traces straight back to Madonna’s 1998 anthem of new motherhood, “Little Star.” It fits squarely in the mid- to uptempo variety created for blasting in earbuds and out auto windows as spring transitions to summer season, and inviting Lola onboard tends to make complete sense for where Madonna is going with her sugary, youth-centric Hard Candy follow-up.

That stated, “Supertar” does not have the hookiness of album-leader “Give Me All Your Luvin’” nor the chart-dominating, juiced-up club-thump of “Girl Gone Wild.”

What do you feel, music fans? On a sliding (and grinding) scale of “American Life” to “Masterpiece,” where does this new track fall? Can it stand out on this wildly anticipated album, or will it fall into other songs’ shadows like its predecessor “Little Star” did on Ray of Light?
