New Year’s Eve 2011 Concert Guide
It’s been a long year. Scratch that, it’s been a veeerrrry long year. From social revolutions to the end of our occupation of Iraq, from the death of celebrities and dictators to a man who sneezes bullets and the mystery of planking, the world experienced a slew of emotions and all sorts of cultural and political upheaval in 2011. And that’s not even counting the plethora of music news that had the blogosphere abuzz this year.
So, as the question begs, what comes next? Well, 2012. If you were to believe certain factions, it’ll be the end of days. A more likely scenario, though, is that it will be another busy year, with people to meet, triumphs to celebrate, disasters to mourn, and a whole other set of memories to file away as we march perpetually onward toward the Great Unknown. A dreary prospect for sure, one that almost makes the impending Apocalypse sound warm and fuzzy. However, there is temporary respite in the form of New Year’s Eve.
New Year’s Eve is that magic night where one year is all but over. It’s the chance to stop worrying for a moment. It’s an opportunity to celebrate surviving the last 364. It’s the start of a whole new scheme or design for the upcoming 365. Rather than chugging cheap champagne and letting off fireworks, NYE should be commemorated with the one thing that makes any year bearable: music.

Deadmau5 Launches Summer and Fall Tour
Following Deadmau5’s recent appearance on YouTube’s Canadian cult cooking show, Epic Meal Time – his “Cheesy Grilled Cheese Tower” episode garnered more than 2.5 million views since its debut May 3 – the Toronto based electronic producer and performer has a lot to anticipate for the second half of 2011.
On the agenda is a unique North American tour showcasing a new live production, a fresh remix of “Raise Your Weapon,” a DVD Live at Earl’s Court, a new Deadmau5 Touch Mix App, and a “Design a New Mau5head for Deadmau5” competition.
Kicking off August 5 at Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival, Deadmau5 will join other headliners Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, and My Morning Jacket to commemorate the festivals 20th anniversary. From there he will embark on his Meowingtons Hax Tour, stretching across the United States and Canada until fall.
His tour includes an appearance at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival, and has him returning to Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York’s Roseland Ballroom. The tour will consist of “full” shows and “unhooked” shows. The “unhooked” shows will not feature the full the full stage setup and light show, but in his words, “will tend to be longer and more diverse.”
Prior to launching his tour, Deadmau5’s North American label, Ultra Music, will release Deadmau5 Live at Earl’s Court, a live DVD that captures his performance July 5 at London’s historic Earls Court. Deadmau5 was the first electronic artist to completely sellout its 19,000-capacity venue. On May 23, Ultra Music issued exclusive remix packages to iTunes and Beatport of “Raise Your Weapon,” from Deadmau5’s 2010 album, 4×4=12.

Deadmau5 Drops In On Project Blue Book’s Tommy Lee, DJ Aero, Porter Robinson

That sneaky lil’ deadmau5. Apparently, modern science has perfected a teleportation device — or so it would seem. If there is one thing that we’ve learned over the past few years it’s that you can always expect the unexpected from our pal Joel Zimmerman (deadmau5), and at the recent Miami Music Week festivities, the charismatic Canadian took the Project Blue Book gang by surprise.
Let us set the stage: It was one of our more entertaining interviews of the week. After all, how could sitting down for a chat with 3/4ths of the Project Blue Book crew be anything less than utterly fantastic? With the young, talented, and extremely witty Porter Robinson telling me about the chemistry test he had to take that Tuesday back at his North Carolina high school, and DJ Aero explaining in detail how Skrillex’s tour manager, “The Road Hog,” was nearly cited with a health code violation for being nude from the waist down in the DJ Booth at LIV nightclub just a few nights before — it was a rather humorous chat from the get go. All while Tommy Lee worked a shake weight and blew bubbles at his girlfriend (and deadmau5 vocalist) Sofi, as she sat and chatted off camera with her most recent collaborator, Moguai (who she had just met for the very first time in the lobby just five minutes earlier). I mean seriously, Bob Ross (rest his soul) could hardly paint a better picture himself.
Anyway, the trio was supposed to be joined by Skrillex as well, but the night before (or morning of, however you view it), he finished his last of many gigs at 7 in the morning — so we let him sleep in a bit before facing the cameras. In any case, to make long story short (too late), it was just the 3 of them chatting with me on the rooftop of our scorching poolside bungalow at The W Hotel.
Now, just before the Blue Bookers sat down for our chat, I received a bummer of an email from one of Joel’s managers telling me that our interview (scheduled that same afternoon) needed to be pushed until the next day. His flight from Toronto was canned because of that pesky fire/explosion at Miami International Airport … and here’s where the fun began.
The boys and I had just gotten to talking about how Joel was stuck and what a mess the whole thing was when all of a sudden … BOOM! Well, it’s better off explained by watching the video. All I can really do textually is relate this to a mathematical equation. Team Mau5trap + Project Blue Book = Magic… ‘Nuff said. Enjoy.
