The hushed, never-speak-or-you’ll-miss-it synth-adorned folk of Bon Iver was a surprise best nominee for Feb. 12′s Grammy Awards. Nonetheless, the band was no doubt more at house last evening on “Saturday Evening Dwell,” which has opened 2012 with a string of adventurous musical bookings. Following the husky, torch-signer camp of Lana Del Rey and preceeding the novelty pop of Karmin next week, the Justin Venon-led Bon Iver carried out a pair of songs that slowed the show to lullaby pace.

The campfire-pleasant reclusive pop of “Holocene” is an unlikely Grammy nominee for record and song of the year. Unusual do Grammy voters opt for subtle, and Bon Iver’s “Holocene” stands out amid the heady drama of Kanye West and the knockout vocals of Adele for merely being so easily ignorable.

“Holocene” is all mysterious imagery and lightly plucked hypnotic guitars, and the song was fleshed out on “Saturday Night Dwell” with simple-listening brass and wind chimes. Paired with Vernon’s falsetto, which has constantly been more an instrument than a indicates for lyrical articulation, and the mini-orchestra positioned a premium on tranquility.

Images: Grammys 2012: Leading nominees

“Holocene” was a significantly much better offering for network television than the 2nd song, “Beth/Rest.” Even though Vernon’s lyrics drift toward the abstract, the song showcased Bon Iver’s puzzling affection for ’80s cheeseball balladry, and it came off even much more hokey live than it does on record. Musically, it sounded like a deconstructed version of Don Henley’s “Finish of the Innocence,” a retro, synth-pop exercise rather than a song.

Following the 2008 release of debut “For Emma, Forever Ago,” Vernon’s Bon Iver venture grew to become an instant indie rock myth. The story of the solitary Vernon recording the album in the Wisconsin woods with just a guitar and laptop captured the musician as a tech-savy hermit and caught the interest of everyone from critics to West, who invited Vernon to participate in the recording sessions for his 2010 album, “My Gorgeous Dark Twisted Fantasy.”

Stick to-up “Bon Iver, Bon Iver” has turn out to be a modest hit. It really is sold much more than 350,000 copies in the U.S., according to Niesen SoundScan, and earned the act a very best new artist nomination at this year’s Grammy Awards. Yet there’s a good likelihood the a lot more mainstream Grammy audience won’t even get to know Bon Iver.

Late last week, Billboard.com spoke with Vernon at a promotional physical appearance in New York, and the artist informed the internet site that he had hence far turned down advances from the producers of the Grammy Awards, which will air next Sunday on CBS, as the act isn’t inclined to take element in a substantial-idea Grammy spectacle. “We desired to play our music, but had been told that we couldn’t perform,” Vernon advised BIllboard. “We had to do a collaboration with someone else.”

The Grammys normally place a premium on multi-artist pairings, placing the likes of Mumford &amp Sons with Bob Dylan or Taylor Swift with Stevie Nicks. More uncommon is it that an artist is allowed to execute its personal song in its entirety, as last year’s album of the year winners Arcade Fire were permitted to do.

Regardless of the Grammy outcome, here’s a video of the band carrying out “Holocene” on “Saturday Evening Live”:

And here’s Bon Iver performing ”Beth/Rest,” but you have been warned:

There are numerous techniques to get popular on the World wide web, from cutting a warbly music video about your favorite day of the weekend to becoming a New York congressman with an uncertain grasp of Twitter’s immediate-message function. Here’s how the 31-year-previous Australian-Belgian musician Wouter De Backer, who sold out the El Rey Theatre on Thursday night when he performed as Gotye, got observed.

Initial, he recorded “Somebody That I Used to Know,” a quiet, stately breakup song brightened around the edges with samples and vocal harmonies. Then he made a modest video in which he’s painted to blend into a mural and gets an earful when the song’s guest vocalist Kimbra emerges — painted in related stripes — to inform him off.

An adorable cat video really should be in a position to tear this clip to ribbons in Internet site visitors figures. But “Somebody That I Utilized to Know” is at the moment zeroing in on 60 million views, and it’s producing an American star of the genre-bending Gotye. He had a prolonged career prior to this, releasing numerous independent albums of reggae-influenced, electronics-infused folk-pop in Australia, in which he’s currently a main artist. But he may possibly be one particular of the greatest examples of YouTube helping to break a non-novelty pop star in America. His El Rey show proved there is severe musicianship behind individuals on-line likes.

De Backer cut a great-guy, alt-dude visage onstage at the El Rey, complete with bedhead, a deep V-neck T-shirt and a heartfelt vocal functionality. His last L.A. show in the fall, at the Silver Lake indie-rock club the Satellite, sold out quickly, and for this tour with a complete backing band Gotye proved he’s currently aiming for festival crowds.

De Backer (a drummer and multi-instrumentalist) decked the El Rey stage with acoustic and electronic percussion kits that he wandered among amongst verses. At the back of the room, a video-manipulator tweaked animation samples that lent often-amusing, at times-haunting edges to his songs.

He started the set with his galloping new single “Eyes Broad Open,” a drum mélange that has each reason to be a KROQ hit. “Smoke and Mirrors,” a bluesy waltz driven by electric piano, started as noir but spiraled into sun-dazed pop by the end. Other numbers, especially these from his newest album “Making Mirrors,” had been a curious mix of ambitious production opportunities and earnest barbecue folk.

When Gotye’s at his very best, the songs have a way of warping outdated ideas into one thing fascinating. A blueprint dub reggae jam gets a groaning feedback squall in the margin he sweetened the depressive trip-hop of “Heart’s a Mess” with velveteen string section samples.

But for all his rangy instrumental skills and un-teachable methods close to a chorus, Gotye has a massive streak of beach-dude earnestness. That trait’s surely about to make him a Bonnaroo mainstay, sometimes channeling Jack Johnson after an all-evening Animal Collective binge. He didn’t leaven the New-Agey coos of “Save Me” by asking for a communal audience phone-and-response. And although it can make 1 critic truly feel like his own heart pumps viscous black crude for saying so, Gotye’s straightfaced ode to a friend’s dying canine, “Bronte,” veered awfully near to camp.

But these quibbles are up against a tide of audience affection that will most likely make Gotye a worthy amphitheatre headliner within the 12 months (he has a coveted Coachella slot in spring). When he played “Somebody That I Utilized to Know,” he backed off the microphone for the song’s 2nd verse, letting the crowd’s women take more than for him. They have been louder than any factor happening onstage.

50 Cent is betting big on the New York Giants. Backstage at the Bud Light Hotel in Indianapolis during Super Bowl weekend, the hip-hop tycoon spoke to Yahoo! about the million-dollar wager on his house town.

“Baby had mentioned he had $ 5 million on the Patriots,” 50 mentioned in response to the Money Money CEO’s proposed bet on New England. “I just feel he was just passionate about the Patriots winning and just said that. I do not feel he really would bet $ five million.”

The G-Unit captain banked $ 500,000 when the Giants defeated the 49ers in the playoffs. “It would just be risking what I won the 1st time,” he explained.

But a single bet he will not be taking is posing nude on Twitter if the Giants drop, which one fan advised. “No. This is what happens on my Twitter,” he explained. “When people say truly insane factors, I say, ‘OK.’ I really don’t say anything at all else. I just say, ‘OK’ so my followers can see the crazy issues individuals say to me because they don’t pay out interest to what they are saying. They only shell out focus to my response.”

Every method the cinema pioneer and his perform with wonderment, and the expanded edition of this album comes complete with a DVD of the recent restoration to “Le Voyage Dans la Lune.”

Watching the film with AIR’s accompanying music is a delight. The spacey French duo of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel have crafted a score that is equally vintage and fresh, be it the toyish rhythms and alien results of “Astronomic Club” or the intergalactic doodles of the celebratory “Parade.” By the time the duo gets to the cosmic funk of “Sonic Armada,” it’s not possible to discern no matter whether AIR is playing with guitars, synths or lasers. The music, like the film, feels as if it’s conjured from a dream.

Nowadays M.I.A., aka Maya Arulpragasam, debuted her video for new single “Bad Girls,” working yet again with “Born Free” co-conspirator Romain Gavras. Filmed in Ouarzazate, Morocco, the country’s film capital also seen in “Lawrence of Arabia,” “The Last Temptation of Christ,” “Gladiator” and many other Western motion pictures, the video is meant to evoke a Persian Gulf landscape – dusty, baked, semi-apocalpytic and in the hands of M.I.A. and Gavras, utterly challenging-core.

Set to M.I.A.’s Punjabi-laced chill-banger, “Bad Girls” is a lady gangsta fantasy but one particular that plays off quite true substances from lifestyle in the Middle East. There is crumbled architecture, sustained over many years of attack smouldering oil tankards young males in kaffiyeh, standing around dangerously bored mysterious women covered from head to toe, with only their kohl-lined eyes flashing out. Most of us Americans have noticed that existence only in bits of CNN video, left to venture our very own conclusions about their day-to-day grind.

But then “Bad Girls” is M.I.A.’s Middle East — and in her very own way, she can make it everyone’s Middle East. She’s deadpanning about getting sex in cars although vamping in front of those tankard fires. Girls are gyrating with AK-47s, although swathed in cheetah patterns, polka dots and gold. And like Ice Cube would (or any young dude feeling futile and angry), there are old family members sedans to grab and turn into drifting, racing stunt rides, whether on Crenshaw, Eight Mile or a bullet-scarred road running parallel with an oil pipe line.

The lyrics are not anything at all you haven’t heard just before -– “live quick, die young negative girls do it well” –- but it’s M.I.A.’s potent present to be capable to take individuals attempted-and-accurate sentiments of the swagger daily life and combine them with Bhangra big-drum strains, guerrilla politics and the pure easy sight of people goofing about. She utilizes the traditional markers of one of the most successful exports there is -– rap music –- to draw the other side of the globe ever closer to us. Whether it’s bombs over Baghdad or not, in M.I.A.’s vision, today was a great day in the Middle East.

As the band prepares to hit the stage for its two-week residency at the hotel Friday, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman officially dubbed Feb. three, 2012, “Motley Crue Day.” We imagine sales of eyeliner and leather pants on the Strip are about to skyrocket.

The platinum-offering band, highlighted in a current Instances characteristic story, will play 4 exhibits a week during its Vegas stint. In case you’re pondering what variety of stage present may possibly lure folks to celebration with the Crue instead than devote Super Bowl Sunday or Valentine’s Day with a loved 1, take a appear at some clips of the band’s substantial-spending budget interactive stage display that consists of drummer Tommy Lee executing on a rollercoaster. It makes his sky-large, rotating drum cage from back in the ’80s look like child’s perform. Check out a list of dates and click here video of Lee’s wild rollercoaster ride below (caution: some raunchy language.)

Some of the higher hurdles: Can they pull off this reunion minute with no killing every other? And, most essential to the band’s accomplishment, is guitar maestro/dad Eddie Van Halen even now in a position to easily dance his fingers up and down the neck of his instrument in techniques that not only help his claim as 1 of the great rock guitarists but advances his craft in a meaningful way.

And then there’s the challenge of the marketplace: In the 28 many years because Roth recorded a total album with Van Halen, the landscape has entirely changed. When the band’s original lineup final released a record, home taping was “killing” music and the query was regardless of whether to purchase “1984” on LP or cassette, or borrow a friend’s copy and tape more than Foreigner “4.”

Now the dilemma isn’t just, need to you devote income on the CD ($ 14.99 checklist cost) or a digital copy (also — frustratingly — $ 14.99). It is also, how considerably are you prepared to commit to purchasing in? Will a handful of dropped bucks on a handful of the best person tracks suffice? Or will “A Distinct Kind of Truth” be the best Spotify streaming album, not good enough to pay out hard funds for but worth a mouse-click when you’ve got a spare few minutes? Or need to you just ask your computery friend to Sendspace you a pirated copy?

Hunting at this record in purely monetary terms: It is got three functions, “As Is,” “Outta Space” and “Big River” that would warrant investing true funds on. These could have been hits in the alternate universe in which Van Halen followed up “1984,” not with the Sammy Hagar-helmed “5150” but with the authentic lineup intact. 3 other people are halfway good songs that may possibly click at some point (“You and Your Blues,” “Bullethead,” “Blood and Fire”), that you’d be advised to place in your queue for more reflection a couple of harmless filler tracks and 3 clunkers that the band ought to be reimbursing us for (“Tattoo,” “Beats Workin’,” “Stay Frosty”).

It’s really a perfect rock record for the pick-and-select era: a handful of good songs that you can buy without having to deal with the body fat.

“A Diverse Kind of Truth” is in fact not bad in truth, it is pretty great, all things regarded. Faint praise, certain, but provided the good quality of the band’s 1st single from it, “Tattoo,” and the background of aging bands reuniting for yet another stab at the charts and a money-in on former glory, 1 can be forgiven for getting skeptical.

A pop metal song that bangs close to in the head clumsily, “Tattoo” surely wasn’t a positive portent, but that half of the record rises to the level of the band’s glory days is a testament to the ingredients that made up Van Halen circa ’84, and “Truth” is a confirmation that this band wasn’t a fluke.

Thirteen high-volume songs developed immediately after productive negotiations between the Three Twins LLC (a.k.a. Alex, Eddie and Wolfgang), and you-know-who’s Diamond Dave Enterprises Inc., “A Various Variety of Truth” lives up to its title: This is alternate-reality rock in which a band attempts to time travel into 2012 from 1984, rehearse for a few months and complete adequate decent songs to convince followers that a tour ticket will be worth it and that Van Halen is a genuine deal band creating a true offer record despite the inter-band machinations and tour revenue prognostications.

Killer riffs abound. Were Eddie Van Halen stripped of his legend and presented to the masses as a hot new discover, he’d nonetheless be received as a single of the meanest, most thrilling metal guitarists in the genre’s historical past. During “A Diverse Sort of Truth,” Eddie maneuvers between enormous speed metal sprints and his trademark wailing solo design the latter flashy guitar runs tend to sound samey over the program of the album, but taken individually, Eddie has seldom sounded much better. One particular listen to his contributions to “Big River” must shut up any doubters.

The other way to look at it is that regardless of the bangers that effectively revive the Van Halen brand, half of this record features songs that will seldom if ever make it onto a concert set checklist. It’s these songs that drag the complete point down and make “A Different Kind of Truth” really feel exhausted, like an amazing outdated-college Trans Am that can do a wicked burnout from time to time but stalls from misuse.
