This Sunday, in the midst of the war of attrition that will be Super Bowl XLVI, Madonna will roll her ridiculously ornate stage onto the field at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and try to blow some minds for eight or 9 minutes.

Madonna can definitely do it she has the requisite deep catalog of hits, a theatrical approach to carrying out, and enough bold-faced numbers in her iPhone to unleash some surprises. “Give Me All Your Luvin’” most likely will not get the task carried out on its personal, although luckily she has “Vogue,” “Holiday,” “Ray of Light,” and “Like a Prayer” in her pocket.

So who will she have to eclipse to get described in the greatest Super Bowl halftime performances of all time? The modern era of Super Bowl halftime reveals began in 1991 with New Children on the Block, although outside of Michael Jackson’s absurdly massive overall performance in 1993, the early many years were considerably lacking in spectacle.

Factors get far better at the end of the ’90s, but the actual entry into the modern era came in 2001, when producers brought collectively Aerosmith, Britney Spears, *NSYNC, Mary J. Blige, and Nelly for a jam-packed more than-the-top rated run via the present pop chart.

After the notorious Janet Jackson incident in 2004, concentrate shifted once again, largely to traditional rockers going more than their biggest hits. Some of those were terrible (Tom Petty &amp the Heartbreakers), while others have been just underwhelming (the Who).

So who was the very best?

Like several concerns, the answer to this 1 is Prince. In 2007, His Purpleness brought every thing: Eye-singeing spectacle, incendiary musicianship (it’s achievable Prince whipped out the best guitar solo in Super Bowl background), and a shock or two (such as his out-of-nowhere cover of Foo Fighters’ “Best of You.” Plus, he did it all in the midst of a ridiculous downpour. Who could potentially leading that?

U2 is also in that conversation. In 2002, with the events of September 11th, 2001, nonetheless fresh in the minds of the football-watching public, Bono and organization delivered their impassioned anthems while having to pay somber tribute to the fallen. It was touching and mighty—not a thing you normally get in the course of your halftime entertainment.

And even however it is remembered mostly for the reveal of Janet Jackson’s nipple that apparently triggered our financial system to collapse, but it was actually a quite nice turn from Jackson and Justin Timberlake.

Which Super Bowl halftime display is your favorite? And will Madonna be capable to land on top?

Justin Vernon of Bon Iver had a rather remarkable 2011, what with the focus for his self-titled album, his work with Kanye West, and his sudden demand as a collaborator and producer. He’s up for a handful of Grammys following Sunday, February 12, and may just walk away with some gold, but you will not see him onstage with a guitar.

The conversation surely occurred, however it broke down in apparently magnificent fashion. Billboard spoke to Vernon final evening (he’s in New York for a overall performance on Saturday Evening Dwell this weekend), and he laid out the story in instead verbose terms.

“We wished to perform our music, but had been advised that we couldn’t perform. We had to do a collaboration with a person else,” Vernon advised the magazine. “And we just felt like it was such a huge stage — we’re finding nominated for this record that we created. Me and Brian [Joseph] and a bunch of our f—ing friends and we have been offered accolades for it, and all of a sudden we have been being asked to perform music that had nothing to do with that. We kind of said ‘f— you’ a minor bit, and they type of acted like they needed us to play, but I do not assume they wanted us to play.”

Vernon didn’t divulge who the Grammy producers wanted him to collaborate with, but he did not that they had been “awesome folks.” “But you know what? F—in’ rock n’ roll must not be made the decision by men and women that have that job,” Vernon additional. “Rock n’ roll must be the f—ing people with guitars close to their backs.”

So even though Vernon will not be joining the likes of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Bruce Springsteen, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Foo Fighters, and Nicki Minaj on the Grammys stage, who are the “awesome people” the producers wished Vernon to tag-group with for a song or two? Leave your guesses, conspiracy theories, and wild accusations in the comments.

Justin Veron informed SPIN earlier this week, ”Whenever we listen to ["Beth/Rest"], we feel this extra… ‘Yes. We’re going to do this, motherfuckers.’ It’s not irony.” The anthemic closer to final year’s magnificent Bon Iver, Bon Iver may sound like its tuned to the sentiment of early 90′s mainstream cinema (or possibly it is just this video that’s been forever altered how I hear the song), but just take one particular listen to the solo piano version you’ll locate that underneath Hornsby/Winwood schmaltz there’s really a song there.

But on Saturday Night Dwell, Bon Iver played the hell out of the tear-jerker “Beth/Rest”, in addition to our amount a single song of 2011, “Holocene”. Verify out the performances of both beneath (via The Audio Perv). Bonus points to Colin Stetson for sporting a Liturgy t-shirt.

Two weeks from right now, Nickelodeon boy band Massive Time Rush will launch its Much better With U tour in Las Vegas, and commencing a single week immediately after that (in Chicago on February 24), they will be joined by some quite unique visitors: A single Direction.

EW has obtained an unique photo of the two bands collectively and ready to tour the nation. (Wishing all nine gents could be on your desktop? Click Here for a full-dimension picture.)

Are you by chance unfamiliar with A single Route? That is probable to change. The British fivesome, constructed by Simon Cowell in the course of The X-Factor UK‘s 2010 season, has previously taken the motherland by storm — their first single “What Helps make You Beautiful” became the most pre-ordered single in Sony Music’s historical past — but now they are teaming up with Large Time Rush to launch a Stateside career.

To appease the masses of eager young females, “What Make You Beautiful” (under) will be created obtainable on digital retailers on Valentine’s Day (a stroke of marketing genius if I’ve ever heard one), and Columbia Records says in a statement that “due to overwhelming fan demand,” their debut album Up All Night will be released one week early on March 13.

On top of that, One particular Route is set to seem in an upcoming episode of Nickelodeon’s leading-rated present iCarly, and their music video for “What Tends to make You Stunning,” which has currently racked up 47 million VEVO views, will premiere on the kids network on February 11.

Are boy bands officially back in type? Ever since the age of the Backstreet Boys and N’Sync, there have been countless attempts to launch new super-groups (Anybody keep in mind Youngstown? Just me? Okay…), however none have actually panned out.

But with Huge Time Rush on a sold-out tour (and with their single “Music Sounds Far better With U” out now), 1 Route garnering deafening buzz, and fellow Brit-imports The Desired racing up the pop charts with their Guetta-esque “Glad You Came,” it looks like the Beliebers and Lovatics may have some new tween fanbases to reckon with.

Tell me, readers. Are you a A single Course fan? What about Large Time Rush? Do you feel boy bands are poised for a key return?

What goes into the generating of a excellent Drake song? Plenty of items. Confessional lyrics, for illustration, a good beat, and possibly an ample supply of cardigan sweaters.

Oh, and in the case of “Marvin’s Area,” an ex-girlfriend’s voicemail message.

That ex is now revealing herself to be Ericka Lee, and she’s suing the rapper to a bid to get partial songwriting credit (go through: royalties).

According to the suit, Drizzy and Lee had been innovative partners, typically co-writing songs and poems. “Plaintiff’s contribution is extremely important to the total operate,” the official complaint, filed in California, reads. A single contribution they view as important is her voice the suit alleges that Drake in truth gave Lee vocal credit in the type of “Syren Lyric Muse.” The audio is now registered by the events in the U.S. Copyright Workplace.

The suit also claims that Drake sent Lee texts saying factors like ”U fundamentally created that song” and “It’s s–t without you.” And in yet another a single of these messages, Drake apparently stated he’d give the ex 2% of the publishing royalties? Which sounds like a quite weird issue to examine by way of text, but Drake’s a weird dude, so who understands.

It is a strange scenario all all around, and it’ll be interesting to see how it develops. Actually, even though, it was a lengthy time coming offered how usually the guy calls out his exes by name on his albums, you’d imagine at least a couple of of them would be quite peeved.

Anyway, till all of this gets sorted out, give the track an additional listen to hear specifically what Lee’s demanding compensation for:

When most folks believe of Mark Lanegan, they could believe of the Screaming Trees, the psychedelically-infused tough rock band from the Seattle region that Lanegan co-founded and sang for, or of Queens of the Stone Age, the guitar-driven rock and roll outfit led by Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri that featured contributions from Lanegan. In recent years, Lanegan has been displaying a softer, a lot more delicate side via his duets with former Belle and Sebastian cellist/vocalist Isobel Cambpell in what may possibly be described as a contemporary Lee Hazelwood-Nancy Sinatra pairing. For these surprised by the soft side of Lanegan, all that is necessary is to peruse his “solo” efforts. I hesitate to use the word solo simply because on several of his non-band-relevant tasks, the quantity of men and women involved in recording practically quantity to a mini-super group. Situation in point: Lanegan’s first solo effort, The Winding Sheet.

The roots of The Winding Sheet lay in a never ever fulfilled project amongst Lanegan, Screaming Trees’ drummer Mike Pickerel, and Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic that started in late 1989. Why the project fell apart is difficult to say. Nirvana had just released the Blew EP, and the band was more than 5 months from starting function on Nevermind. Initially planned as an EP of blues songs, only 1 track, “Where Did You Rest Final Night”, featuring each Cobain and Novoselic, managed to survive the aborted venture and uncover its way onto the last album. Another quantity, “Down in the Dark”, functions Cobain on background vocals. After Cobain and Novoselic left the project, Lanegan and Pickerel recruited Mike Johnson, Lou Barlow’s replacement in Dinosaur Jr., who co-wrote the vast majority of the songs on The Winding Sheet with Lanegan, and Jack Endino, the man who produced the lion’s share of grunge bands in the mid-to-late 80s.

With a lineup of two Screaming Trees, the bass player for Dinosaur Jr., and the producer largely accountable for the “Seattle Sound,” the resulting album may well be anticipated to be extremely loud, aggressive, and testosterone-laden. In other words, like much of the output from the region already. Rather than amp up the volume and blaze forward with a barrage of guitars and drums, Lanegan and co. instead stripped down the songs, employing mostly acoustic instruments with electric guitars employed for nuance and physique. As a result, the songs are much more personalized and introspective, focusing on far more severe considerations, with the acoustic nature allowing more interest to be place on the lyrics. Alcohol-drenched dirges expose a dark night of the soul as Lanegan battles his inner demons, be they physical or emotional, chemical or sexual–the struggle to conquer but frequently failing into the bottom of a bottle.

Upon listening to The Winding Sheet, the contemporary listener may really feel compelled to note stark similarities amongst this album and Nirvana’s Unplugged from a handful of many years later. There is good explanation. The roots of Nirvana’s unplugged overall performance are firmly grounded in the blues sessions with Lanegan. Dave Grohl, who at the time of this album’s recording had nevertheless to even meet Nirvana, in later years has praised The Winding Sheet and cited it as a huge influence on how Nirvana approached the Unplugged venture. Instrumentally, it’s a no-brainer nevertheless, vocally, it is eerie. Cobain’s vocal inflections heard throughout his more nuanced and delicate materials can be traced to Lanegan’s vocal strategy. When Lanegan strains his voice singing, “You can’t kill what’s previously dead” on opening track “Mockingbird” or for the duration of the gentle “Museum”, or possibly most evidently, when Lanegan is screaming the last lines of “Where Did You Rest Final Night”, there is tiny doubt to his influence on Cobain.

Lanegan’s vocal type not only informed Cobain’s tactic but also that of Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley. On “Down in the Dark”, the acoustic nature is temporarily set aside for a deeper, heavier, bass-driven approach. The vocals hover inside the electrical fuzz, not quite buried, but not overtly out in front. The wrenching “Woe” is a great illustration of Lanegan “lending” vocal phrasings (and even perhaps topicality) to Staley, while “Down in the Dark” is more musically connected to Staley’s band’s sound. In simple fact, there is a lot on The Winding Sheet with no which Alice in Chains’ August 1990 debut, Facelift, may possibly have sounded significantly diverse.

Softer, far more purely acoustic tracks like “Museum”, “Wild Flowers”, “Eyes of a Child”, and album closer “I Enjoy You Little Girl” show a much more open and emotive Lanegan, vulnerable and reserved. It is on these acoustic numbers that Lanegan’s prose is most evident. Not content material to create lyrics that plainly and merely convey a story, Lanegan’s songs are truly poetic. The album’s title track exposes Lanegan as a man at war with his very own soul, and the opening stanza of “Eyes of a Child” is haunting with lyrics “See by way of the eyes of a youngster/And it will not be true/Eyes neither hateful or cruel/No lies conceal/Eyes that wander, eyes that strayed/Although the shame in your heart remains.”

In addition to containing songs and music that would later on influence other, possibly more acknowledged, artists, The Winding Sheet also has moments highlighting influences on Lanegan. “Ugly Sunday” provides hint at the Hazelwood-esque side of Lanegan’s artistry that would emerge 25 many years later with his Campbell duets. With lyrics like “It’ll take a hard rain to wash your taste away,” “Ugly Sunday” could be a cousin to Hazelwood’s “Some Velvet Morning”. In addition to Hazelwood’s handprint, the blues make appearances all above The Winding Sheet, particularly with the cover of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night”.

Most frequently attributed to Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter, “Where Did You Rest Final Night”, originally called “In the Pines”, has its roots in Americana going back to the 1870s. With as several lyrical alterations as there are performers who have covered it, the song practically universally capabilities a female character underneath suspicion and usually accused of carrying out incorrect, typically one thing of an adulterous nature. The song effuses with jealousy and rage practically to the point of genuine horror and tragedy. In Lanegan’s edition, jealousy does not seem to be to fit. The lyrics start asking in which the girl was the evening just before. Her solution, “In the pines… where the sun do not ever shine,” would be enough to permit for suspicion however, the last stanza supplies the massive reveal. “Her husband… his head was found… but his physique by no means was found” would seem to propose that the protagonist of the song might have certainly been in the woods… burying her murdered husband.

American Gothic would continue to fill crevices in Lanegan’s songwriting, but it is here on The Winding Sheet in which it all began. The understated sounds on this album have been magnified exponentially through its great influence, adding a lot more weight to Grohl’s belief that The Winding Sheet is “one of the best albums of all time.”

Drizzy had one of his large break out hits final year with “Marvin’s Room” which he meant to be a ‘warm up’ track. Now that any and each and every music artist in the R&ampB and hip hop game has covered the lovesick tune, his ex girlfriend has come out of the woodwork to file a lawsuit against him.

Ericka Lee is the ex in query, who is producing her claims as the girl on the other finish of the phone line on the track. Her now filed lawsuit claims that she’s suing due to the fact Drake has excluded ”her from sharing co-writer royalties on 1 of his biggest modern hits.”

Lee has claimed that she nevertheless possesses the text messages Drake sent her relating to the song, saying issues like “U basically built that song,” and “It’s s–t with out you.” Ericka was allegedly supposed to have an opening monologue and sing the hook on “Marvin’s Space,” but it looks like when their connection went south (sometime final 12 months, reportedly) so did the enterprise offers.

Drake’s reps made a statement on behalf of the Youthful Cash star:

“This claim is entirely without merit and our client has not engaged in any wrongful conduct. Ericka Lee consented to the use of her voice in the song ‘Marvin’s Room’ prior to its release. Lee asked only for the credit she received as ‘Syren Lyric Muse,’ and she did not ask for any compensation. It was only right after she retained a attorney that there was a demand for payment. Drake attempted for months to resolve the matter amicably, and he now appears forward to staying vindicated in court.”

Drummer Bill Ward has now made the decision he won’t be a element of the reunion unless he gets a “signable” contract…&#13

The recently reformed band – who are due to headline Get Festival in June – hit their initial significant obsticle final month when it was revealed to fans that guitarist Tommy Iommi had been diagnosed with cancer.

Black Sabbath released a statement asking followers to send him “positive vibes”, adding that they were relocating from LA to the UK as they continued operate on their very first album in 33 many years so they could be nearby even though he underwent remedy.

But now one more obstacle stands in the way of the reunion.

Drummer Bill Ward has explained he will no longer be a component of the reunion unless alterations are made to his contract, which he describes as “unsignable.”

“If I sign as-is, I stand to drop my rights, dignity and respectability as a rock musician. I imagine in freedom and independence of speech. I grew up in a challenging rock/metal band. We stood for some thing then, and we played from the heart with honesty and sincerity. I am in the spirit of integrity, far from the corporate malady, I am genuine and honest, fair and compassionate.”

He also emphasises that it’s not about “greed” or cash generating. “I’d like a thing that recognizes and is reflective of my contributions to the band, which includes the reunions that started out fourteen a long time ago. Immediately after the final tour I vowed to by no means yet again sign on to an unreasonable contract. I want a contract that exhibits some respect to me and my family, a contract that will honor all that I’ve brought to Black Sabbath considering that its beginning.”

The sticksman does also reiterate that he “definitely” desires to perform on the album and head on tour with Black Sabbath and his loyalty to the band and fans is “intact”.
