Martin Courtney IV (Real Estate) – “Kicker of Elves”/”As We Go Up We Go Down” (Guided By Voices Covers)

These GBV covers by BTW Real Estate’s frontman appear on Guided By Guided By Voices, a cassette compilation out via Wild Animal Kingdom. In the spirit of a Robert Pollard collage, he opted to pair songs from different albums (Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes, respectively). Interestingly, Real Estate bandmate Alex Bleeker shows up on the comp, too: I always figured Real Estate were guided by Galaxie 500, the Grateful Dead, weed, Uncle Wiggly, and Ridgewood.

Ellogoods – “Natalie Portman and the God – Catch a Falling Star”
Something about this nonsensical video is captivating but then I always like looking at shiny things. Apart from the somewhat comical quotes about Natalie Portman, the song is actually moving. Close your eyes and listen.
WOW…i love the vocals on this but don’t know some of the names that come up during the video and, yes, Natalie Portman is HOT!

Royksopp’s The Drug by that go (Noel Paul & Stefan Moore)

As part of a forthcoming 10 minute film to promote their new album Senior (September 13), Norwegian duo Royksopp enlisted that go to direct idiosyncratic The Drug.
“The promo was shot in Detroit and involves three girls who are out of place and out of time” explain the band. “We spent a week climbing through various abandoned buildings—a church, school, factory, and crack house. We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped make this music video”.

Neil Finn: A crowded house expected for Largo solo shows
Crowded House wraps its two-month North American tour with a final stop tonight in Denver. But lead singer and songwriter Neil Finn won’t let any dust settle after the performance: He’s heading back to Los Angeles, which he calls “an old home away from home,” for a pair of solo concerts this weekend at Largo at the Coronet.
“Having done three or four months of Crowded House shows,” he told me Thursday, “it sounds very appealing to dip into my other repertoire. I haven’t done as much of that as I’d like to do. There’s a freedom, and an intensity, playing solo that I really enjoy, and I’d like to do more.”
While fans should rightly expect generous samplings from his three solo albums and perhaps a song or two from either of the two Finn Brothers albums he recorded with big brother Tim, Neil said he’s not by any means closing the door on the Crowded House songbook.
“The great thing about it is because it’s just me, I can go anywhere, so there probably will be a few Crowded House songs,” he said. “They’re fresh enough from having done them on tour, and doing them as solo things is also quite appealing.”
Because Finn has carved out a reputation as a a songwriter’s songwriter, one who has crafted some of the catchiest pop-rock songs of the last quarter-century, I couldn’t resist asking how he responds to some of the popular and critical reaction to Crowded House’s latest album, “Intriguer.” One writer, I mentioned to him, suggested, “It seems that Neil is no longer interested in writing anthems like [the group’s 1987 breakthrough hit] ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over.’ ”
Welcome Back Kings Of Leon With 15 Covers Of “Use Somebody”

Kings Of Leon released a new single and video this week and dozens (dozens!) of you lurkers stepped up to discuss it. KoL has become an increasingly hot button act on this site as we’ve witnessed the Followills become a parody of themselves (see: the hipster clothing line, drunken interviews, “Sex On Fire”). But while we scoffed at the band’s royal status in the UK, the lackluster Only By The Night quietly went platinum in the States on the back of the Grammy winning “Use Somebody,” a pretty decent sounding pop/rock single the first three to four hundred times I heard it. Late last summer Hayley Williams performed an inspired, stripped-down version that we never posted because you can go to other sites for Haley Williams news. But boy did she open some miserable floodgates. Herewith, for no other reason than page views lists are fun, are fifteen covers of “Use Somebody” by a surprisingly diverse array of professional recording artists (I’m including American Idol finalists in that definition). Et tu, Matisyahu?
