Valdur – “Berserrker” (Stereogum Premiere)

Valdur Raven God Amongst Us 125x125 Valdur – “Berserrker” (Stereogum Premiere)

The ballsy Mammoth, Lakes California trio Valdur play blistering blackened punk/war metal (featuring a Norwegian-born vocalist named Thor). They aren’t crusty like Bone Awl. It’s a close-cropped brutal death-inflected BM sound: Think of the recent recordings of Philadelphia’s (great black hope) woe captured during a Western blizzard and with a more straightforward/traditional, less twisting/mathy/post-black forward push. Which isn’t to say this music isn’t complex: Valdur create an epic, dense atmosphere and display a surprisingly graceful ear for melody and a strong dynamic pull within all that buzzing. They also bring along an uncompromising DIY spirit to the table: As with their 2007 self-titled debut and 2008 split with Lightning Swords of Death, the band released this new “self-funded” full-length, Raven God Amongst Us, on drummer Sxuperion’s Bloody Mountain imprint. (You may recognize the album title from the name of a track on that Lightning split.) Its most immediate track is the single “Berserrker,” a kind of fight song for the band, and maybe USBM in general.

Jason Botkin closes Streetgang Films to focus on Furlined

Jason Botkin Streetgang message Jason Botkin closes Streetgang Films to focus on FurlinedJason Botkin has closed his company Streetgang Films in order to concentrate on the post of executive producer at Furlined, the Santa Monica-based production company that represents Andreas Nilsson, Terri Timely, Yael Staav and several British directors in the US, including Dougal Wilson and Nez.

Jason has closed Streetgang with a farewell message on the company website, revealing that the closure had been in the pipeline for some time. “For me, this is a moment for which I long have planned, but which, nevertheless, comes with some sadness,” he says. “It has been one of the great joys of my life to run this company.”

With directors Paul Minor and Vincent Haycock, and also the likes of Keith Schofield and Nilsson, Streetgang Films gained a reputation for producing videos with top production values at moderate budget levels, and unusually for an LA-based outfit, grew largely on the basis of its popularity with British labels and commissioners. Streetgang directors have been responsible for videos for Muse, Editors, Cheryl Cole, Miike Snow, MSTRKRFT and many more.

In the past year, Jason has established close links with Furlined (itself closely linked to Blink and Colonel Blimp in the UK) producing for the likes of Andreas Nilsson and Terri Timely, with their music video work listed as Streetgang productions. Now he will act as executive producer responsible for music videos at Furlined a roster including Nilsson and Adam Hashemi – and for the US only – Terri Timely, Nez and Dougal Wilson.

Paul Minor and Vincent Haycock will continue to be represented by Alexa Haywood at Free Agent UK in the UK, and Tommy Labuda in the US.

Star Trek: A talk with rising underground rapper Trek Life

Star Trek: A talk with rising underground rapper Trek Life Trek Life is so L.A. He bleeds purple and gold, bumps Battlecat and name-drops the oft-forgotten Funkdoobiest in interviews. That’s as L.A. as you can get for someone whose formative years were split between the city itself and West Covina. Yet Trek waves the flags of both the Inland Empire and the 310/323/818 axis.

He’s of the generation that came up on both Death Row and Project Blowed. His first experience rapping came in the mid-'90s, over will.i.am’s earliest beats, back when he went by the name Will-1X. He learned how to make records firsthand by watching Atban Klann (Black Eyed Peas 1.0) and Blood of Abraham, two of Ruthless Records’ less menacing outfits. He came up attending the famous Unity nights and even attempted to battle Myka 9 as a callow teenager.

Flash forward a decade and a half and Trek’s sophomore release, “Everything Changed Nothing,” is one of this year’s finest local rap records, a thoughtful, well-crafted effort from an MC versed in regional history and his place in it. It helps when you have a slate of beats from Washington, D.C.’s Oddisee, who has rightfully asserted his place at the helm of producers working underneath whatever passes for the mainstream.

The genesis for the record came when the East Coast producer came west and sifted through Trek’s old record collection: Freestyle Fellowship, Pharcyde and old Ice Cube records, from G-funk to the subterranean thump of the L.A. underground. The result never feels like sonic tourism. Oddisee’s sojourn allowed him to soak up the vibes from the scorching sunshine, swaying palm trees and freeway funk. Meanwhile, Trek artfully uses the canvasses to spin tales of his daughter, cookouts to celebrate law school graduations, and black migration to the West Coast.

Released late last month on nascent indie hip-hop imprint Mello Music Group, “Everything Changed Nothing” is smart without being strident, and never loses its sense of place. In belated honor of its release, Trek is premiering “Due West,” and explaining to Pop & Hiss why he’s so L.A.
