Goldfrapp: The Idolator Interview
If you’re on the hunt for perfect springtime music, then you could do a lot worse than picking up Goldfrapp’s synth-laden new release, Head First. After the more meditative 2008 LP Seventh Tree, the UK duo have returned with a thinly-veiled penchant for early ’80s melodies torn right out of the Xanadu playbook on their fifth record.
“We definitely did set about making an ‘up’ album,” Alison Goldfrapp admitted to us. And so far it’s resonating—Head First has now been lodged at #4 on iTunes for two days and counting. But while we tried to get the British singer to spill any details on a possible upcoming tour of the States (”I can’t talk about that right now!”), we do at least know she’s headed to Los Angeles to perform at the Hollywood Bowl on June 27 during KCRW’s World Festival (alas, without her seemingly stage-shy musical partner Will Gregory in tow).
Hop below to learn about Alison’s rather unglamorous experience making the “Rocket” video, and why it was time for Goldfrapp to dust off the synthesizers once more.
IDOLATOR: First of all, I’m really looking forward to catching your Hollywood Bowl performance this June.
ALISON GOLDFRAPP: Oh, God—I can’t wait.
How did that gig come about for you?
AG: Well, I’m not entirely clear of the exact thing at the moment, but I believe it’s some kind of festival that happens there every year. So we were invited by the organizers. But it’s one of those places that as soon as I heard, I was like, “Oh my God, yes. I’d love to do that.”

Lady Gaga And Elton John Join Forces For Charitable Reasons
They must have hit it off at the Grammys—Elton John and Lady Gaga will team up again for a rainforest fundraiser at Carnegie Hall on May 13. We fully expect Gaga to embrace the theme and come dressed as a parrot.
The Rainforest Foundation was founded in 1989 by Sting (who is also set to perform) and his wife Trudie Styler, aiming to promote awareness for the need to conserve the plant life (and human life) living in tropical forests. The charitable event, which includes a live auction and a gala dinner, is now in its 21st year, and often boasts an impressive lineup—Billy Joel, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen (among many others) have contributed their voices to the swanky event in the past. We’re hoping that instead of sharing a duet on “Speechless” once again, Elton John takes on the Beyoncé role (and her wardrobe) for a riveting live performance of “Telephone.” Don’t tell us you wouldn’t pay top dollar to see that.
Tickets go on sale in early April, and you can find out more information here.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor Paints A Pretty Picture In “Bittersweet” Video
We already love the song, so it would take a lot for us not to fall head over heels for Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s video for her single “Bittersweet.” Thankfully, the Brit pop goddess didn’t disappoint. Sophie’s video takes a few minutes in order to get past a few routine dance numbers, but it suddenly gets an exciting splash of color. (Literally. There’s paint. And lots of it.) Watch the gorgeous clip below.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor – “Bittersweet”
It looks as though the filmmakers took the high-speed cameras from the Planet Earth and Life documentary series and captured what paint looks like in extreme slow-mo. Actually, the vid to “Bittersweet” sort of reminds us of this famous Sony Bravia Paint ad, but with added dance breaks (and a much more pop-tastic tune in the background):
