Akon And David Guetta Keep The Good Times Rolling With “Party Animal”

Akon Akon And David Guetta Keep The Good Times Rolling With “Party Animal”The latest in the steadily growing line of collaborations between singer Akon and Grammy-winning DJ/producer David Guetta is about—what else?—partying, dancing and hooking up at the club. “Party Animal” follows up the pair’s recently-surfaced tune “Nosy Neighbor”—though there’s no official word yet on whether either track will appear on Akon’s upcoming Stadium Music album.

Give “Party Animal” a spin after the jump.

By David Guetta’s standards, this song’s pretty much a by-the-numbers snooze. For Akon, however, it’s basically par for the course. What more can you really expect from an unimaginative dance track with the chorus “I can see that you’re a party animal, a party animal, a party animal like me”?

Drake Drops His First Single “Over”

104503 drake Drake Drops His First Single “Over”Drake is finally dropping his album Thank Me Later this May, and he’s made sure that there’s something for everybody. “I got a lot of great songs on my album,” he said to Toronto radio station 93.5 The Flow before debuting his first single “Over.” “I got songs for women who wanna feel special. I got songs for dudes—if you ever thought my music was too soft, this is one you will enjoy.” We have to hand it to Drizzy, not every rapper can pull off name dropping Michael Jackson, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Roger Ebert in one song. Listen to  “Over” below.

In the song, which sounds like he sampled the film score to a 70s caper film, Drake displays his adept rap flows while showcasing a deep growl in his voice not unlike his “Forever” collaborator Lil Wayne. (Let’s just hope he doesn’t have the same legal and dental problems as Weezy.)

But unfortunately, “Over” doesn’t impress us much—it’s little too downbeat for what should have been a powerhouse “I’m here, world!” hit first single. We’re not sure why the beat sounds so dreary when Drake’s rapping that he’s got “two thumbs up” like “Ebert and Roeper,” and “I swear this life is like the sweetest thing I’ve ever known/’bout to go Thriller, Mike Jackson on these bitches/all I need is a f***ing red jacket with some zippers.”

Still, we think Sprite spokesman could pull off that look better than Chris Brown did.

Jay-Z Documentary ‘NY-Z’ Displays The Rapper’s Love Of New York, Black-And-White Photography

Picture 13 Jay Z Documentary ‘NY Z’ Displays The Rapper’s Love Of New York, Black And White PhotographyJay-Z made a triumphant return to Madison Square Garden this week with the opening dates of his BP3 tour, but he’s taking a look back at his previous concert at the NY arena. Hova teamed up with director Danny Clinch for the documentary NY-Z, which chronicles Jay’s star-studded “Answer The Call” benefit concert at MSG back in 2009. And although Absolut is sponsoring the concert doc, this is a much, much, much subtler mogul-and-alcohol pairing than Diddy and Ciroc (ie. we don’t see a bottle of vodka in every other shot). Trailer below.

Absolut NY-Z Trailer

While showcasing Jay-Z’s performance on-stage, the doc also manages to artistically capture the beautiful imagery of the streets of New York, filmed in a very similar style to the rapper’s elegantly-photographed black-and-white videos  “Empire State of Mind” and “99 Problems.”

We’ve just got one question—was current d-bag king John Mayer the best artist to edit into the trailer? There are tons other musicians (Kanye West, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, to name a few) who performed at the same show, so we’re scratching our heads why they thought highlighting Mayer’s guest spot would get more people to be excited to watch the film. Unless they think people will assume he’ll be making more disparaging remarks against Jessica Simpson in the doc. Which is very likely, knowing him.

Pop goes the sell-out: How rockers, rappers and pop stars learned to stop worrying and love the brand

Pop goes the sell out: How rockers, rappers and pop stars learned to stop worrying and love the brand

Sure, pop stars, rockers and rappers are faced with some troubling commercial realities these days: plummeting album sales, diminished opportunities for commercial airplay, rampant Information Age bootlegging and a wildly oversaturated musical marketplace.

But at least they don’t have to worry about a certain bugbear that caused artists of previous generations of performers untold sleepless nights. Acts from the bottom to the pinnacle of the pop strata no longer have to worry about losing their integrity by selling out.

As laid out by this story, which appears in Sunday’s Calendar section, selling out is no longer possible – at least within certain time-honored notions of that term. These days, hip-hoppers, rock stars and pop acts are lending their music and images to a variety of branded products and services in ways that would have been beyond antithetical in, say, the Woodstock era, the punk rock '70s or the slacker-era '90s.

With this in mind, herewith, Chris Brown’s “Forever” – a.k.a. the most successful gum jingle in the history of recorded music:
